A Lisbon apartment may have mains electricity, piped water and natural gas; a rural house may use mains electricity plus bottled LPG, a municipal water connection or borehole, and perhaps solar generation or battery backup. This guide explains the common arrangements and how to choose suppliers without assuming every property has the same infrastructure.

Electricity: network versus supplier

In mainland Portugal, E-REDES operates the electricity distribution network for most consumers, while you choose a commercial electricity supplier (comercializador). Changing supplier does not mean replacing the local wires or meter network. For faults in the distribution network, meter/network matters or supply-point information, see E-REDES. For contracts and tariffs, deal with your chosen supplier.

How to choose an electricity provider

Do not choose only by the headline €/kWh. Compare the energy price, daily contracted-power charge, discounts and their conditions, direct-debit/e-billing requirements, fixed versus indexed pricing, contract duration, extra services, and whether your consumption suits a simple, bi-hourly or tri-hourly tariff. The best starting point is the independent ERSE energy price simulator, which compares commercial electricity and natural-gas offers in mainland Portugal.

Common suppliers worth comparing include EDP Comercial, Galp, Endesa, Iberdrola, Goldenergy and Repsol. These links are practical examples, not a ranking: use ERSE with your own consumption and contracted power.

Contracted power matters

Your potência contratada limits how much electrical load you can use simultaneously and contributes to the standing charge. Too little can cause the installation to trip when several appliances run together; too much means paying for capacity you may not need. Before changing it, consider electric water heating, induction cooking, air conditioning, EV charging, pumps and other high-load equipment.

Moving into a property

Ask for a recent bill and identify the electricity supply point (CPE), meter and current contracted power. Record meter readings and photograph meters when you take possession. Do not simply continue paying a seller’s or landlord’s contract indefinitely: arrange the appropriate change of holder or new contract and keep evidence of the handover date/readings.

Solar panels and energy-company packages

Portugal’s solar resource makes self-consumption attractive for many homes. Some electricity companies—including EDP, Galp, Iberdrola and others—sell or arrange solar-panel systems, often with installation, monitoring, financing and optional batteries. Compare these packages with independent installers rather than assuming your electricity supplier is cheapest. Check panel/inverter warranties, installation scope, expected production, roof suitability, battery economics, after-sales service and what happens if you change electricity supplier later.

For regulatory information on self-consumption, consult DGEG’s self-consumption information. A rooftop installation connected to the house is different from a portable panel/power station used only as backup.

Power cuts and rural/mountain homes

Remote and mountain properties can be more vulnerable to local faults, storms or long repair distances. A small UPS may keep a router running; a larger portable LiFePO4 power station can keep phones, lights, internet and selected appliances working; a properly designed fixed battery/solar system can provide more substantial resilience. Size backup by Wh/kWh capacity and continuous/surge output, not marketing labels.

Useful Amazon searches include LiFePO4 portable power stations, folding 200W solar panels, router/ONT backup UPS units and food-grade water containers. BorderlessAdvice may earn a commission from qualifying Amazon purchases.

Generator safety: a petrol/diesel/LPG combustion generator must never be operated inside a house, garage or other enclosed/partly enclosed living space because of carbon-monoxide risk. Do not back-feed a household circuit through an ordinary socket. For a fixed generator connection or changeover arrangement, use a competent electrician. For many modest outages, a battery power station is simpler and avoids combustion exhaust.

Gas: not every home has piped natural gas

Portugal has natural-gas networks in many urban areas, but bottled LPG remains extremely common, especially in rural areas and properties outside the gas network. You may encounter butane (butano), propane (propano), a bulk LPG tank, or a collective piped LPG installation.

How bottled gas normally works

For a cylinder system, you normally buy/exchange a compatible gas bottle from a dealer, filling station or authorised point. In many areas you can also order delivery to your home. Galp explains its cylinder options and home-delivery process; Repsol offers online ordering, home delivery or authorised-point collection. Rubis Gás supplies cylinders, bulk LPG tanks and collective piped LPG and specifically serves remote areas.

Do not assume every bottle, regulator and appliance is interchangeable. Bottle systems can use different valves/regulators and pressure specifications. Use the correct regulator and hose/installation for the appliance and gas type; if you inherit an old system, have it checked rather than improvising an adaptor.

Butane or propane?

Both are LPG. Butane is widely used for ordinary domestic cooking and hot water, while propane is commonly chosen for higher consumption, outdoor storage and colder conditions. The right choice depends on the appliance and installation—not simply price. Never switch gas type where the appliance/installation is not designed or adjusted for it.

Bulk LPG

Larger rural homes may have a fixed LPG tank filled by tanker. Before buying or renting such a property, establish who owns the tank, whether there is an exclusive supply contract, current tank level, inspection/maintenance responsibility and access for deliveries. Do not assume a tank visible on the land belongs to the property owner.

Water: who supplies it?

Mains water is usually supplied by the municipality, municipal company or regional/local water utility. The provider therefore depends on the property location. Ask the Câmara or seller/landlord who operates the local system, obtain the meter number and recent bill, and record the reading at handover. Water bills commonly include wastewater/sanitation and waste-related municipal charges as well as consumption.

Can you drink Portuguese tap water?

Yes, water supplied through the public drinking-water network is intended to be potable. ERSAR states that public tap water is treated, mineralised, balanced and suitable for human consumption and normally does not require domestic filtering. If a particular property has unusual taste, colour or an old internal plumbing system, distinguish a building-level problem from the quality of the public supply and ask the supplier/ERSAR for current information.

Public fountains: filling drinking-water bottles

In rural Portugal it is also common to see people filling bottles or larger containers at a fonte or fontanário. Some are connected to a controlled public supply or tested spring; others are decorative, untreated or explicitly unsuitable for drinking. Never assume flowing water is potable just because local people collect it.

Look for a sign stating água potável (potable) or current municipal/Junta information confirming it is suitable for consumption.

If marked água não potável / imprópria para consumo, do not drink it.

Where there is no clear sign, ask the Câmara/Junta or local water authority rather than relying on appearance, taste or folklore.

Use clean, food-grade containers; avoid containers previously used for chemicals or fuel.

Keep filled containers clean, closed and out of heat/sunlight.

Do not obstruct the fountain while filling large quantities; these are shared community facilities.

ERSAR warns that water from a private well, borehole, river, lake or other private source may contain harmful microorganisms or substances even when it looks and tastes good. That warning is a useful rule for an unverified spring too: test/verify first. Also keep private-source water physically separate from the public-water plumbing as required for public-health protection.

Bottled water

If you prefer bottled water—or need a temporary supply while a rural source is being tested—Portuguese supermarkets sell still and sparkling bottled water in individual bottles and larger multipacks. This is a preference/convenience option, not something most households need because ordinary public-network tap water is unsafe.

Wells, boreholes and springs

A rural property’s well (poço), borehole (furo) or spring can be valuable, but ownership, abstraction/use rules, water quality, pump condition and seasonal yield require separate due diligence. Do not connect untreated private-source water into the same internal network as public drinking water. BorderlessAdvice covers wells, boreholes, septic tanks and off-grid utilities in dedicated Portugal guide #127.

Utility handover checklist

Photograph electricity, water and gas meter readings on possession day.

Obtain recent bills and identify CPE/contract numbers and the actual local water supplier.

Check whether gas is natural gas, bottled butane/propane, collective LPG or a bulk tank.

For bottled gas, identify the bottle/regulator type and nearest dealer/delivery service.

Check electrical contracted power and whether it suits the property’s appliances.

Compare electricity/gas offers with ERSE rather than accepting the inherited tariff.

For solar, obtain inverter/panel/battery documents, warranties and registration/monitoring access.

For wells/boreholes/springs, verify quality and legal/technical status separately from mains water.

In remote areas, decide what actually needs backup during an outage: router, lights, fridge/freezer, well pump, heating controls or medical equipment.

Useful links

ERSE — official electricity and gas offer comparator

ERSE — consumer information

E-REDES — electricity distribution network

ERSAR — water and waste-services consumer information

ERSAR — tap water and private sources

DGEG — electricity self-consumption

Galp — bottled-gas delivery

Repsol — bottled gas ordering/delivery

Rubis Gás — cylinders, bulk and piped LPG

Last verified: 2 October 2026.
