The Netherlands has 12 provinces<\/strong>. Provinces are the public-government layer between the Rijk and municipalities. They matter especially for spatial planning, nature\/environment, provincial infrastructure, regional transport, culture\/heritage and regional economic policy.<\/p>\n\n

Province is not the same as region<\/h2>\n

Randstad<\/em>, Achterhoek<\/em>, Twente<\/em>, Rivierengebied<\/em>, Zuid-Limburg<\/em> and similar names can describe economic, cultural or geographic regions rather than a separate constitutional government layer. Regional cooperation can still matter greatly for transport, work and housing.<\/p>\n

Randstad versus elsewhere<\/h2>\n

The Randstad gives access to several large employment and cultural centres and dense public transport, but housing pressure can be intense. Outside it, some places offer more space or a different housing market, but the trade-off may be fewer direct rail links, longer commuting, more car dependence or a smaller international ecosystem.
