For newcomers, the simplest sequence is usually temporary mobile data first, then compare a Dutch prepaid/SIM-only/mobile contract and the fixed connections actually available at your address.

Quick start

Make sure you have mobile data immediately after arrival, using roaming, prepaid or an eSIM where appropriate.

Once settled, compare Dutch mobile options: prepaid, SIM-only or a phone-inclusive contract.

Check the contract term, data allowance, EU roaming, activation requirements and total monthly cost.

For home internet, run an address/postcode availability check: the networks and speeds available depend on the property.

Compare actual expected speed, installation timing, contract length and total price after introductory discounts.

If switching an existing Dutch service, use the provider’s switching service where suitable and arrange number retention if you want to keep your Dutch number.

Mobile: prepaid, SIM-only or phone contract?

Option

Useful when

Watch for

Prepaid

You need a Dutch number quickly or do not want a longer commitment.

Per-unit costs and topping up.

SIM-only

You already own a suitable phone and want a monthly plan.

Contract term, data and cancellation rules.

Phone + subscription

You also need a handset.

Total device cost, financing/eligibility checks and longer commitment.

Keeping your Dutch mobile number

Dutch consumers have a right to number portability. Ask the new provider to arrange nummerbehoud. ACM ConsuWijzer says a mobile number can be taken to another provider and the provider may not charge a separate fee for number retention. Ending a contract early can still create contractual costs.

Home internet depends on your address

Do not choose a fixed-internet provider solely from a national comparison. ACM explains that provider choice and technology vary by location. Depending on the address, fixed service may use fibre, cable or copper-based infrastructure. Run an address check with providers before comparing plans.

Check download and upload speed if you work remotely, teach online, upload large files or make frequent video calls. Also check installation lead time: a cheap plan is less useful if you need reliable connectivity immediately and installation takes weeks.

Contracts, switching and the 14-day cooling-off period

ACM ConsuWijzer states that when you take out a telecom subscription online, by telephone or in the street, you generally have a 14-day cooling-off period. After a fixed contract term has ended, consumer telecom contracts can normally be cancelled with a notice period of no more than one month. When switching, the new provider can often handle the old contract through the switching service.

Newcomer practical tips

Do not wait for fixed internet before getting connected. Have a mobile-data fallback.

Check your address first. Advertised national speeds do not mean that speed is available in your building.

Look beyond the introductory price. Compare the price after discounts end and the total contract cost.

Check Wi-Fi separately from line speed. A fast fibre connection can still feel poor if router placement or in-home Wi-Fi is bad.

Keep evidence of orders and cancellation dates. It helps if switching creates duplicate billing.

For a Dutch number you want to keep, request nummerbehoud through the new provider.

Useful terms

mobiel abonnement

mobile
