Those tendencies can be useful orientation points, but they are not rules: a small design studio, hospital, warehouse, school and multinational can have very different hierarchies and communication styles.

Informal does not mean hierarchy disappears

First names, relatively casual clothing and open disagreement with a manager can make a workplace feel flat. The manager still has responsibility and decision-making authority. A useful newcomer habit is to watch how decisions are actually made rather than assuming that an informal tone means everyone has the same role.

Meetings, consultation and consensus

People may expect to be consulted before a decision, and a meeting can contain more open disagreement than newcomers from strongly hierarchical work cultures expect. The Dutch word overleg is worth learning: discussion and coordination are often part of the process. “Polderen” is a broader cultural/political metaphor for negotiating across different interests; do not assume every office literally makes every decision by consensus.

Direct feedback

Feedback may focus quickly on what is wrong, unclear or inefficient. That can feel personal when you are used to more cushioning. Equally, “Dutch directness” is not permission to be rude. Ask what should change, confirm expectations and separate the content of feedback from its delivery. If behaviour crosses into bullying, discrimination or unsafe conduct, treat it as a workplace issue rather than a cultural quirk.

Punctuality and calendars

Arriving on time for meetings and appointments is generally a safe default. Calendars can be heavily used, including for short conversations. If you are delayed, send a message. This overlaps with the wider Dutch agenda culture described elsewhere on BorderlessAdvice.

Lunch, coffee and the borrel

A simple lunch brought from home or eaten with colleagues is common in many workplaces, although workplace catering varies enormously. Coffee moments can be socially useful. A borrel is an informal drink/social gathering; a vrijmibo is shorthand for vrijdagmiddagborrel. Participation can help you get to know colleagues, but it is not a test of whether you belong and alcohol is not obligatory.

Colleagues are not automatically private friends

A friendly workplace does not necessarily mean colleagues will immediately become part of each other’s private lives. Some teams socialise extensively; others keep work and home separate. Concrete invitations work better than assuming a vague “we should have coffee” is a plan.

Useful Dutch workplace words

overleg – consultation/discussion

vergadering – meeting

leidinggevende – manager/supervisor

functioneringsgesprek – performance/development conversation (terminology varies)

arbeidsvoorwaarden – employment conditions

cao – collective labour agreement

vakbond – trade union

uitzendbureau – temporary employment agency

borrel / vrijmibo – informal workplace drinks/social gathering

Culture is not employment law. A manager saying “this is how we do things here” does not override your contract, an applicable CAO or Dutch law.
