Knowing that distinction prevents practical surprises.

Christmas: two days

The Netherlands has Eerste Kerstdag (25 December) and Tweede Kerstdag (26 December/Boxing Day), both official public holidays. Family meals are common; gourmetten – tabletop cooking in small pans – is a recognisable modern household tradition. Christmas markets, trees, lights, kerstkransjes and elaborate supermarket food ranges appear through December.

For a quick practical look at what Dutch shops mean by “Christmas”, HEMA’s Christmas section shows the typical mixture of decorations, table settings, chocolates, sweets and seasonal products. It is a commercial source, not an authority on tradition.

New Year’s Eve: oliebollen, countdown and changed fireworks rules

Oliebollen and appelflappen are strongly associated with New Year’s Eve, and temporary oliebollen stalls appear in many towns. At midnight people may toast with sparkling wine and wish each other gelukkig nieuwjaar.

Do not rely on old fireworks advice. In 2026 a national consumer fireworks ban applies. Consumers may generally use only category F1 novelty fireworks such as sparklers; larger F2-F4 fireworks are for professionals. Municipalities can grant exemptions for organised neighbourhood or association displays. Carbidschieten is a regional New Year tradition, especially in parts of the north/east, but whether and under what conditions it is allowed is determined locally. Check your municipality.

King’s Day: orange, vrijmarkt and crowded centres

Koningsdag is normally 27 April and is an official public holiday. Orange clothing and accessories are everywhere; many places have a vrijmarkt where residents sell second-hand goods, while city centres host music and events. The preceding evening, Koningsnacht, can be a major nightlife event in some cities.

Transport and city access can change substantially on King’s Day. If you are travelling into a major celebration, check the municipality and transport operator shortly beforehand rather than relying on an ordinary timetable.

A few other dates newcomers notice

Easter: first and second Easter Day; chocolate eggs, brunches and family activities are common.

Liberation Day, 5 May: a public holiday, with festivals and remembrance context linked to 4 May (Dodenherdenking).

Sint Maarten, 11 November: children go door-to-door with lanterns and songs in places where the tradition is strong; it is regional rather than equally prominent everywhere.

Rokjesdag: an informal cultural/media expression for the first notably warm spring day when lighter clothing suddenly appears – not an official day or organised holiday.

Cross-links: see Dutch food & cuisine for seasonal foods and Dutch birthdays for another set of traditions that can surprise newcomers.

A practical newcomer calendar for Dutch Christmas, New Year, King’s Day, Easter, Liberation Day, Sint Maarten and seasonal customs – including current 2026 fireworks rules.

[2
574,137,576,575,554
15,16,17
23,20
28,30

post-741","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-christmas-netherlands","ba_topic-dutch-traditions","ba_topic-kings-day","ba_topic-new-year-netherlands","ba_topic-seasonal-food","ba_audience-eu-eea-swiss","ba_audience-non-eu","ba_audience-residents","ba_section-language-culture","ba_section-living","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage
["GET
