Friends can genuinely like you and still propose coffee three weeks from now. Once a social appointment exists, however, the time is often treated seriously.

How to make plans that actually happen

Replace “we should meet sometime” with a concrete proposal.

Offer a date, time and activity: “Saturday at 14:00 for coffee?”

If that fails, ask for an alternative date rather than interpreting a busy week as rejection.

Put the agreement in your calendar.

If plans change, say so as soon as practical.

On time is a social courtesy

Being punctual is commonly valued for dinners, birthdays, club activities and private appointments as well as business meetings. There is no national five-minute rule, and friend groups differ, but assuming that “social” automatically permits substantial lateness is risky.

The cultural paradox

To newcomers this can feel formal: schedule the friendship, arrive at exactly the agreed time, then sit in a living room drinking coffee in an entirely informal atmosphere.
