The two questions that matter most are: what happens if medical care abroad costs more than the Dutch tariff? and who pays for assistance or repatriation?

Your basic health policy is not unlimited worldwide cover

Rijksoverheid states that Dutch basic health insurance reimburses foreign holiday care up to what the treatment would cost under the Dutch system. Expensive private care abroad can therefore leave a large shortfall. An additional health module or travel insurance with medical-cost cover can insure some or all of that gap depending on the conditions.

Repatriation is a separate risk

Rijksoverheid also states that the Dutch basic health policy does not cover repatriation costs when you must be transported home because of illness or death. That protection comes from travel insurance or qualifying supplementary health cover.

Single-trip or annual policy?

A short-trip policy can make sense for occasional travel. A continuous/annual policy can be more convenient for several trips, but compare maximum trip duration, destination area and total annual cost. There is no universal break-even point because prices and household definitions differ.

Cancellation insurance is not the same thing

Annuleringsverzekering generally covers specified cancellation/interruption reasons and limits. It is often sold with travel insurance but should be evaluated separately. Changing your mind, a known event or a risk already present when booking may not be covered. Read the list of insured reasons and the insured travel value.

Check these before travelling

Europe or worldwide geographical cover.

Maximum trip length.

Medical-cost top-up and whether the insurer requires contacting its alarm centre.

Repatriation and emergency assistance.

Baggage limits, depreciation and sub-limits for electronics/jewellery.

Winter sports, diving, climbing or other higher-risk activities.

Rental-car excess if relevant; do not assume general travel insurance covers it.

Work/business travel if the trip is not purely private.

Existing medical conditions and any applicable disclosure/exclusion wording.

EHIC still matters

For eligible people travelling temporarily in the EU/EEA/Switzerland, the European Health Insurance Card can help access medically necessary state-provided care under local rules. It is not a substitute for travel insurance: it does not itself create baggage, cancellation, private-clinic or repatriation cover.

In an emergency abroad

Get urgent medical help first.

Contact the health/travel insurer’s emergency assistance line as soon as reasonably possible, especially before major non-emergency treatment or transport.

Keep medical reports, prescriptions, itemised invoices and proof of payment.

For theft, obtain the police/report documentation required by the policy.

Do not assume a provider promise that the insurer will pay is the same as insurer authorisation.

Official source

Rijksoverheid: healthcare cover on holiday abroad

Verzekeringskaarten — industry-standard insurance summaries.

How Dutch travel insurance complements basic health cover abroad, including medical-cost gaps, repatriation, cancellation, baggage and high-risk activities.

[2
493,485,498,492
426,255,284,499,261,309,17,308
500,20,22
30,26

post-581","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-insurance-claims","ba_topic-insurance-netherlands","ba_topic-repatriation","ba_topic-travel-insurance","ba_audience-drivers","ba_audience-employees","ba_audience-families","ba_audience-homeowners","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-renters","ba_audience-residents","ba_audience-students","ba_section-healthcare","ba_section-living","ba_section-money-costs","ba_stage-living-stage","ba_stage-preparing
["GET
