Do not buy every policy by default; insure risks that would seriously damage your finances and compare the actual cover, exclusions and excess before comparing price.

What is actually compulsory?

Insurance

Legal position

When it matters

Dutch basic health insurance

Compulsory for many people who live or work in the Netherlands, subject to social-security rules

Covered in the separate health-insurance guides

WA motor insurance

Compulsory for most registered motor vehicles

From the moment a vehicle subject to the WAM is registered in your name, unless a valid suspension removes the normal obligation

AVP personal liability

Not legally compulsory

Protects against many claims when you accidentally cause damage or injury to someone else outside motor-vehicle use

Contents insurance (inboedel)

Not generally compulsory

Your movable belongings at home; especially relevant when replacing them all after fire, theft or major water damage would be financially difficult

Building insurance (opstal)

Not a general statutory requirement, but mortgage lenders commonly require it

Damage to the structure of an owner-occupied home; apartments are often insured collectively through the VvE

Legal-expenses insurance (rechtsbijstand)

Optional

Access to legal help for covered disputes; useful only if the modules, exclusions and cost limits fit your risks

Travel insurance

Optional

Can cover assistance, repatriation, medical shortfalls, baggage and other travel risks depending on the policy

The Dutch government separately treats AOW, Anw, Wlz and employee schemes such as WW/WIA as social insurance. Those are not products you shop for in the same way as an AVP or home policy.

Newcomer priority order

Confirm compulsory cover first. Health-insurance status and vehicle WA have real legal consequences.

Protect catastrophic household liability. An AVP is inexpensive relative to the size of a serious injury/property claim and is not the same thing as car WA.

Match home cover to your housing status. A renter usually thinks mainly about contents and liability; an owner also needs the building/VvE situation checked.

Add travel cover when you actually travel. Check medical-cost and repatriation cover rather than assuming your Dutch health policy pays every foreign bill.

Consider legal-expenses insurance only after checking alternatives and exclusions. Existing or foreseeable disputes are commonly excluded under policy terms, so it is not a policy to buy after a conflict has already started.

Compare coverage before premium

The AFM requires insurers and financial service providers to give consumers relevant pre-contract information. For non-life policies, look for the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) and, where available, the Dutch Verzekeringskaart. Use these to compare what is covered, what is excluded, the geographical area, excess, maximum payments, obligations after a claim and cancellation rules. The full policy wording remains decisive.

Do not automatically buy the add-on at checkout

In July 2026 the AFM warned that embedded insurance sold alongside another product or service can push consumers toward cover that does not fit their needs or duplicates insurance they already have. Before adding ticket, phone, bicycle or purchase protection, check whether the risk is already covered by your contents, travel, credit-card or other policy.

Insurance premium tax

Many Dutch non-life policies include 21% assurantiebelasting (insurance premium tax), normally collected through the insurer. Belastingdienst lists important exemptions, including health insurance, life insurance, accident/disability insurance, unemployment insurance and transport insurance. Travel insurance can contain both taxed and exempt components. Compare the total amount payable rather than a headline base premium.

Money-saving checks that do not reduce protection blindly

Review insurance after a move, new car, marriage/cohabitation, major purchase or change in household.

Remove duplicate cover before cutting important limits.

Check whether a higher voluntary excess produces a saving you can actually afford at claim time.

Compare a package discount against the total price and cover of separate insurers; a bundle is not automatically cheaper.

Keep proof of ownership, photos and serial numbers for expensive possessions.

Tell the insurer about material changes such as letting out your home, long vacancy, major renovation, business use or a different main car driver.

Related BorderlessAdvice guides

Choosing Dutch health insurance

Owning a car: WA, MRB, APK and suspension

Buying a home in the Netherlands

Rental problems and enforcement

Official and sector sources

Rijksoverheid: compulsory WA motor insurance

Rijksoverheid: home-buying costs and building insurance

AFM: required insurance information

Verbond van Verzekeraars: standard insurance cards

Belastingdienst: insurance premium tax

A practical newcomer guide to Dutch liability, home, legal-expenses, car and travel insurance, including what is compulsory, how to compare cover and where over-insurance happens.

[2
126,495,488,485,496,491,486,492
426,255,284,499,261,309,17,308
428,195,168,20,22,19
28,30,27,26

post-573","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-car-insurance","ba_topic-insurance-shopping","ba_topic-home-insurance","ba_topic-insurance-netherlands","ba_topic-insurance-premium-tax","ba_topic-legal-expenses-insurance","ba_topic-liability-insurance","ba_topic-travel-insurance","ba_audience-drivers","ba_audience-employees","ba_audience-families","ba_audience-homeowners","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-renters","ba_audience-residents","ba_audience-students","ba_section-driving-transport","ba_section-housing","ba_section-legal-rights","ba_section-living","ba_section-money-costs","ba_section-moving","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage","ba_stage-moving-arriving","ba_stage-preparing
["GET
