The right route is different for each.

NS delay compensation in 2026

For many ordinary NS tickets and pay-as-you-go train journeys, NS currently offers:

Delay at destination

Typical NS contractual refund

EU statutory rail baseline

30-59 minutes

50% of the relevant fare in many standard cases

No general percentage compensation yet

60-119 minutes

100% in many standard cases

25% of the ticket price if the legal conditions are met

120+ minutes

100% in many standard cases

50% of the ticket price if the legal conditions are met

Intercity Direct uses a different threshold/table, with compensation available from shorter delays. Always use the live NS form/conditions for the actual journey.

If a delay of 60+ minutes is expected

EU rail passenger rules can give you options beyond percentage compensation, including reimbursement or rerouting. NS also explains when it will arrange replacement transport, food/drink or accommodation. If NS has not informed you of available rerouting within 100 minutes of the scheduled departure of a seriously delayed/cancelled service or qualifying missed connection, current rules can allow reasonable alternative public transport to be arranged and claimed in the stated circumstances.

Do not automatically take an expensive taxi and assume NS must pay. NS normally decides replacement transport. For a taxi or self-arranged alternative, get explicit permission where possible and keep proof. NS describes a narrow end-of-day exception if you are stranded and genuinely cannot reach them after repeated attempts.

Last train / stranded at night

If an NS delay means you cannot reach your destination during the same timetable day, contact station staff, the Service & Alarm pillar or NS Customer Service. NS states that it can arrange replacement transport and, if necessary and physically possible, accommodation. Do not simply book a hotel or taxi first unless NS’s conditions for self-arrangement are met.

Missed check-out is not the same as delay compensation

With OVpay, a missed check-out normally creates a correction fare/overcharge. Correct it through the OVpay app/account or relevant journey-detail route. With an OV-chipkaart, use the operator or Uitcheckgemist process where applicable. A valid delay claim is separate and is submitted to the operator.

Regional bus/tram/metro complaints

Start with the operator you travelled with. 9292 is the journey-planning/ticketing layer and explicitly directs journey/service complaints to the relevant transport operator. Regional refund schemes differ, so check GVB/RET/HTM/U-OV/Arriva/Qbuzz/etc. rather than applying NS rules to a bus or tram.

If the operator does not resolve it

The Geschillencommissie Openbaar Vervoer can handle many consumer disputes involving participating rail, bus, tram, metro, OV-fiets and Translink/OV-chipkaart services. It covers topics including delays, service and tickets. Its current complaint fee is €27.50 and is refunded if the consumer is found in the right. Check jurisdiction first: not every type of claim is covered.

The committee also points consumers to the Klachtenloket Openbaar Vervoer as a possible mediation step before filing a formal dispute.

Evidence checklist

Screenshot the journey planner/disruption notice and actual arrival time.

Keep the e-ticket, card journey reference or invoice.

Record operator, train/bus/tram number if known, origin/destination and scheduled times.

Keep receipts for reasonable extra costs and any written permission to arrange alternatives.

Save chat/email case numbers and operator responses.

Submit within the operator’s stated deadline rather than waiting months.

Practical rule

If NS delays you by at least 30 minutes, check the NS refund tool. If another operator disrupts the journey, use that operator’s refund/complaint policy. If the issue is a tap/payment problem, start with OVpay/OV-chipkaart correction rather than a delay claim.

NS delay compensation, EU rail passenger rights, rerouting/last-train assistance, payment corrections and escalation through the Public Transport Disputes Committee.

[2
455,447,454,453,446
460,255,284,261,17,308,461
428,168,20,22
28,30

post-497","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-delay-refunds","ba_topic-ovpay","ba_topic-passenger-rights","ba_topic-public-transport-operators","ba_topic-public-transport","ba_audience-commuters","ba_audience-employees","ba_audience-families","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-residents","ba_audience-students","ba_audience-visitors","ba_section-driving-transport","ba_section-legal-rights","ba_section-living","ba_section-money-costs","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage
["GET
