Do not choose a subscription by name; compare it against a month of real journeys and your employer’s reimbursement policy.

NS off-peak and weekend times

NS off-peak hours are currently Monday-Friday 09:00-16:00 and 18:30-06:30, with weekends and public holidays treated as off-peak all day. Weekend Vrij defines the weekend from Friday 18:30 until Monday 04:00. For many NS Flex discounts, the check-in time determines whether the discount applies; always read the exact product conditions.

Main 2026 NS subscriptions

Product

2026 2nd-class price

Best fit

NS Flex Basis

€0/month + €10 one-off if starting without another subscription

Pay afterwards, no train discount.

NS Flex Dal Voordeel

€6.35/month

40% off in off-peak hours, weekends and public holidays.

NS Flex Weekend Vrij

€39.50/month without off-peak add-on; €43.50 with it

Unlimited weekend/public-holiday train travel; optional off-peak weekday discount.

NS Flex Dal Vrij

€127.95/month

Unlimited train travel in off-peak hours/weekends/public holidays.

NS Flex Altijd Vrij

€399.95/month

Unlimited train travel including peak hours.

NS Flex Traject Vrij

Route-dependent

Unlimited travel on one fixed route, including peak hours.

These prices are a dated snapshot for 1 October 2026. A long weekend round trip can already make it competitive.

Traject Vrij: strongest when you commute on the same route in peak hours several days each week; compare with employer reimbursement before paying personally.

Altijd Vrij: designed for very heavy nationwide train use; do not assume it is better than a route-specific product.

Savings tip: export or review your last month of journey history first. Calculate what each subscription would have charged for the same trips. This is much more reliable than choosing from marketing examples.

Co-travel discount

Many qualifying NS subscription holders can give up to three fellow travellers 40% co-travel discount during off-peak hours. The fellow traveller must activate/buy the discount correctly and remain with the subscription holder as required. With an NS Flex co-travel setup, the check-in time can be decisive; a separate co-travel day ticket has its own peak-hour validity rule. Read the current NS instructions before travel.

Children and seniors

Kids Vrij: €0/month and allows children aged 4-11 to travel by train with an accompanying person aged 12+, subject to product conditions.

65+: NS currently has reduced-price Dal Vrij and Weekend Vrij variants for travellers aged 65+. In 2026, Dal Vrij 65+ is €59.95/month in 2nd class and Weekend Vrij 65+ starts at €28.95/month without the weekday off-peak discount add-on.

Keuzedagen 60+: currently available with the Dal Voordeel on-balance product, not every NS Flex setup. Seven off-peak travel days cost €34.95/year in 2nd class in 2026.

Single-trip discounts and promotions

NS promotions change. Use the current NS Spoordeelwinkel, group-ticket options and any current PrijsTijd Deal rather than relying on old HEMA/Bruna forum posts. Always check peak/off-peak restrictions and whether the ticket is tied to a particular train or time.

Supplements

Some faster/international-branded domestic services require a supplement on certain routes. NS lists the 2026 ICE / Intercity Direct supplement at €3.20 for a normal single supplement, with separate subscription options for frequent users. Check the journey planner because supplement requirements can depend on the train and section travelled.

Employer reimbursement

For work travel, ask the employer before buying an expensive subscription. Dutch tax rules allow employers to reimburse actual public-transport costs tax-free, or use the general tax-free kilometre allowance up to the current ceiling. Whether the employer pays this is a policy/CAO/contract question, not an automatic employee right.

A 2026 comparison of NS Flex Dal Voordeel, Weekend Vrij, Dal Vrij, Traject Vrij, Altijd Vrij, co-travel discounts, 65+ products, Kids Vrij and off-peak rules.

[2
450,446,458,451
460,255,284,261,17,308,461
428,20,22,382
28,30

post-493","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-ns-subscriptions","ba_topic-public-transport","ba_topic-student-travel","ba_topic-train-discounts","ba_audience-commuters","ba_audience-employees","ba_audience-families","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-residents","ba_audience-students","ba_audience-visitors","ba_section-driving-transport","ba_section-living","ba_section-money-costs","ba_section-work-business","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage
["GET
