Your practical jobs are to watch the category expiry dates, renew in time, deal with health checks when required and report loss immediately.

How long is a Dutch licence valid?

Category / situation

Maximum normal validity

A1/A2/A/B/BE

10 years

C1/C1E/C/CE/D1/D1E/D/DE

5 years

Age 65–70

Normally until the 75th birthday

Age 70–75

Maximum 5 years

75+

Maximum 5 years, subject to CBR medical-fitness approval; CBR can set a shorter period

Always check the dates printed for the individual categories on the back of the card. A category can expire before the document itself.

When is a Health Declaration needed?

Examples include a first licence/new category, C/D categories, relevant medical conditions and age-related renewal. If your licence expires on or after your 75th birthday, a medical assessment is required for renewal. Rijksoverheid advises starting the 75+ Health Declaration around four months before expiry.

Renewing

You can renew at your municipality. Many residents can also use RDW’s online renewal route if their municipality participates and they meet the digital-ID/photo conditions. RDW’s online fee shown on 30 September 2026 is €53.65, excluding the passport-photo cost; fees and participation can change.

Do not renew unnecessarily early without checking the dates: RDW states that the new issue date is the date on which you submit the renewal application, so an early application can bring the next expiry date forward.

Lost or stolen

A Dutch driving licence can be reported lost/stolen to RDW online free of charge when you meet the conditions. RDW invalidates it immediately and the invalidation cannot be reversed, even if you find the card later. You then apply for a replacement. Do not drive until you again have a valid licence you can show.

Check your own RDW record

In Mijn RDW you can view and download your driving-licence number, validity dates, current and previous categories and 2toDrive information. If you need an authenticated document rather than an informational download, request RDW’s certificate of authenticity.

Personal data changes

RDW warns that a change to personal details such as your name or gender can make the existing driving licence and other identity documents invalid. Arrange replacement documents rather than assuming the old card remains usable.

2026 car-registration practical point

Since January 2026, registering or suspending a vehicle at a kentekenloket or RDW-approved company requires a valid Dutch driving licence. If you do not have one, RDW says you can instead use its online route or go to an RDW inspection/service counter where a valid passport or ID card can still be used. This matters for newcomers who can legally drive on a foreign licence but want to buy a Dutch car.

How long Dutch licence categories last, when medical assessment is needed, online renewal, lost/stolen cards, Mijn RDW and a 2026 vehicle-registration rule.

[2
125,409,407,410
255,284,261,17,308
24,20
28,30

post-448","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-driving-licence","ba_topic-driving-licence-renewal","ba_topic-health-declaration","ba_topic-rdw","ba_audience-employees","ba_audience-families","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-residents","ba_audience-students","ba_section-life-events","ba_section-living","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage
["GET
