The Dutch system has several routes after secondary school. MBO is vocational secondary education; HBO and WO are both higher education.<\/strong> HBO is professionally oriented and normally taught at a hogeschool<\/em>; WO is research-oriented university education. Moving between routes is possible, but admission is not automatically guaranteed.<\/p>\n

HBO is not simply a ‘lower university’<\/h2>\n

The Netherlands uses a binary higher-education model. A university of applied sciences (hogeschool<\/em>) and a research university serve different educational purposes. Programme level, profession and admission requirements matter more than trying to translate the institutions into a foreign hierarchy.<\/p>\n

Going from HBO to WO<\/h2>\n

There is no universal automatic bridge. A university can require a relevant HBO bachelor, specific prior subjects, a pre-master or other evidence. Check the exact master’s or bachelor’s admissions page before planning around a transfer.<\/p>\n

MBO deserves its own place<\/h2>\n

MBO has four levels and can be strongly linked to employment. BOL is primarily school-based with practical training; BBL combines study with substantial workplace learning. MBO-4 is also an established route into HBO.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
