You are not legally required to register with a GP, but doing so is strongly recommended. It gives you a regular first point of contact, continuity through a medical record and access to the appropriate out-of-hours GP service.<\/p>\n

How to register<\/h2>\n
  1. Search for practices near your home.<\/li>
  2. Check whether they accept new patients and whether your address is inside their service area.<\/li>
  3. Follow the practice registration process and provide the requested identity, insurance and contact information.<\/li>
  4. If transferring from another Dutch GP, arrange transfer of your medical record.<\/li>
  5. Save the practice’s normal and urgent phone numbers and identify its out-of-hours huisartsen-spoedpost.<\/li><\/ol>\n

    Can a GP refuse me?<\/h2>\n

    Yes, in some circumstances. Rijksoverheid gives examples including the practice being full or you living too far away. If you cannot find a GP, contact your health insurer: it can help find a practice and mediate.<\/p>\n

    Do not confuse registration with access to emergency care<\/h2>\n

    If you face a life-threatening emergency, call 112. Do not delay because you have not yet completed GP registration.<\/p>\n

    Your medical record<\/h2>\n
