It is a membership organisation. Sport, music, carnival, culture, neighbourhood life, student activities and hobbies are often organised through associations with members, a board and an annual general meeting.

Why newcomers should understand verenigingsleven

Joining a club can give you a recurring social circle outside work. You may encounter contributie (membership fees), an ALV (algemene ledenvergadering), a volunteer board, committees and requests to help with events, transport, coaching or canteen shifts. The exact culture varies enormously by club.

Is every vereniging registered at KVK?

No. KVK distinguishes associations with full and limited legal capacity. A vereniging met volledige rechtsbevoegdheid is created through a civil-law notary and registered in the Handelsregister. An informal association with limited legal capacity can exist without KVK registration. KVK says registration of the latter is not compulsory but is sensible because it reduces directors’ private liability. A limited-capacity association cannot perform every legal act, such as owning real estate.

Typical club vocabulary

Dutch

Meaning

vereniging

association/club

lid / lidmaatschap

member / membership

contributie

membership fee

bestuur

board

voorzitter

chair

penningmeester

treasurer

secretaris

secretary

ALV

general meeting of members

vrijwilliger

volunteer

proefles / proeftraining

trial lesson / trial practice

How to join

Search [activity] vereniging + your town or use the relevant national federation’s club finder.

Check age/level, training times, fees and whether there is a waiting list.

Ask for a proefles or proeftraining.

Ask what membership commits you to: season length, notice period, volunteer duties and equipment.

Register with the club.
