But residence can change your tax reporting, the deposit-guarantee scheme protecting the money, and the practical way Dutch organisations pay you.

Foreign accounts and Dutch tax

Dutch tax returns can require information about Dutch and non-Dutch bank and savings accounts. Which assets and income are taxable depends on your residence, treaty position and circumstances; keeping an account abroad does not make it invisible to Dutch tax rules.

Which deposit guarantee protects a foreign EU bank?

A bank from another EU Member State operating in the Netherlands can be covered by the deposit-guarantee scheme of its home country rather than the Dutch scheme. DNB says EU schemes provide comparable protection, normally up to €100,000 per person per bank in the euro area. Check the actual banking licence, because several brands may belong to one bank.

Belastingdienst can use a foreign payment account

Belastingdienst provides a procedure for registering a foreign payment account for refunds. The account must be in your name and the process can require your BSN, BIC/account information, identification and recent bank evidence. Belastingdienst also publishes instructions for paying Dutch tax from abroad. Build extra processing time into deadline-sensitive payments.

Newcomer account checklist

Tell existing banks your new tax residence/address where required.

Keep annual statements for every Dutch and foreign account.

Check whether your old bank permits customers resident in the Netherlands.

Identify the legal bank and applicable deposit-guarantee scheme, not only the app/brand name.

Update salary, rent, utilities and subscriptions deliberately rather than closing the old account first.

Keep access to old statements after account closure.

What Dutch residents should know about keeping foreign accounts, Dutch tax reporting, deposit protection and using a foreign account with Belastingdienst.

[2
214,257,260,215
261,17
22,19
28,30,26

post-223","ba_guide","type-ba_guide","status-publish","hentry","ba_country-netherlands","ba_topic-deposit-guarantee","ba_topic-foreign-bank-accounts","ba_topic-newcomer-finance","ba_topic-sepa","ba_audience-newcomers","ba_audience-residents","ba_section-money-costs","ba_section-moving","ba_stage-getting-established","ba_stage-living-stage","ba_stage-preparing
["GET
