Dutch toeslagen<\/em> are income-related government contributions toward specific costs such as health insurance, rent and childcare. They are usually paid as an advance based on estimated information. That makes them useful, but also means you can have to repay money if your income, household or other circumstances turn out differently.<\/p>\n

Why newcomers get surprised by repayments<\/h2>\n

A toeslag is normally a voorschot<\/strong>: an advance. Dienst Toeslagen calculates it using your estimated annual income and other information. After the year ends, the final calculation can be higher or lower. A new job, bonus, partner moving in, more savings, changed rent or different childcare hours can all change the result.<\/p>\n

  • Make a current proefberekening<\/strong> before applying.<\/li>
  • Use a realistic estimate of your full-year toetsingsinkomen<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • Update changes quickly in Mijn Toeslagen<\/strong> or the Toeslagen app.<\/li>
  • Do not assume updating your income-tax return automatically updates your current toeslag advance.<\/li>
  • Keep decisions (beschikkingen<\/em>) and check Mijn Toeslagen regularly.<\/li>
  • If your income is uncertain, consider estimating somewhat conservatively rather than maximising the monthly advance.<\/li><\/ul>\n

    Toeslagpartner matters<\/h2>\n

    Many calculations use the income and\/or assets of your toeslagpartner<\/strong>. This is a legal status with specific rules; it is not simply another word for boyfriend, girlfriend or flatmate. A change in marriage, registered partnership, household composition or address can change your entitlement.<\/p>\n

    Assets can matter as much as income<\/h2>\n

    Zorgtoeslag, huurtoeslag and kindgebonden budget all have asset tests. The relevant date is often 1 January of the benefit year. Huurtoeslag has a much lower asset limit than zorgtoeslag or kindgebonden budget, and certain co-residents can also matter.<\/p>\n
