Long-distance trains are mainly run by CP; Lisbon and Porto each have their own metropolitan ticket systems; local and regional buses vary by area; and private intercity coaches such as Rede Expressos and FlixBus can be cheaper or more direct than the train. Its main categories include Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Regional, InterRegional and urban services around Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. Buy tickets through CP’s website/app or station channels rather than assuming a third-party journey planner has the same fare or live disruption information.

Alfa Pendular: the premium long-distance service on the principal north-south axis.

Intercidades: long-distance intercity trains serving more destinations.

Regional / InterRegional: slower services that are important outside the main high-speed corridors.

Urban trains: commuter networks around Lisbon and Porto, plus Coimbra urban services.

For popular long-distance trains, especially at weekends, holidays and summer peaks, booking ahead is sensible. CP also sells promotional advance fares at times; check the live offer rather than relying on a fixed discount quoted elsewhere.

The €20 Passe Ferroviário Verde changed substantially in September 2026

Very recent change: from 27 September 2026, CP expanded the Passe Ferroviário Verde to Lisbon and Porto urban trains. CP now describes it as usable across its national commercial passenger network except Alfa Pendular, subject to the service-specific rules.

The pass currently costs €20 for 30 days, €40 for 60 days or €60 for 90 days and is for Portuguese citizens and foreign residents in Portugal. It covers Regional, InterRegional and urban CP services and can be used on Intercidades in second class, but Intercidades requires a free advance seat reservation. CP currently allows two separate Intercidades reservations per day and says the reservation must be made within the 24 hours before the train starts its journey.

It is loaded onto a Cartão CP; CP now also offers digital-card arrangements. Validation differs by service, so follow CP’s current instructions. This is a particularly good example of why old Portugal transport articles become obsolete quickly.

Check the current Green Rail Pass rules directly with CP.

Lisbon: Navegante, Metro, Carris, suburban rail and ferries

Lisbon’s transport is multi-operator. The Navegante system is central to metropolitan travel, while individual operators include Metro Lisboa, Carris buses/trams, Carris Metropolitana buses, CP suburban trains and Transtejo/Soflusa ferries. Portal VIVA and the operators explain current cards, passes and loading options.

Do not assume one paper/contactless ticket automatically works everywhere. A tourist making a few journeys, a commuter with a monthly Navegante pass and a resident using CP’s new Green Rail Pass can all be travelling on the same railway corridor with different products and rules.

Metro Lisboa

Carris

Carris Metropolitana

Transtejo/Soflusa ferries

Fertagus — the private commuter railway crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge.

Porto: Andante, Metro and STCP

In Greater Porto, Andante is the integrated ticketing system used across participating metro, bus and rail services. The zone system is important: the correct ticket depends on how many zones your trip crosses. The principal operators include Metro do Porto and STCP.

Validate as required even when you have already bought or loaded a ticket. “I paid for it” and “I validated it correctly” are not always the same thing in Portuguese public transport.

Intercity buses: do not forget Rede Expressos and FlixBus

The train is not automatically the best way between Portuguese cities. Compare Rede Expressos and FlixBus as well. Coaches can serve towns with weak rail links, run at useful times when the train does not, and sometimes offer substantially cheaper fares.

FlixBus is especially useful to include in a newcomer comparison because it sells routes in Portugal and international connections through the same booking system. Rede Expressos has a very extensive domestic coach network. Compare actual departure/arrival points, not just city names: a cheap bus that leaves from a peripheral terminal may be less convenient than a train arriving in the centre—or vice versa.

Regional and rural Portugal

Outside Lisbon and Porto, public transport becomes much more local. Municipal and intermunicipal networks may have their own websites, apps, passes and school-day/summer timetables. In rural areas, a route that exists on paper may run only a handful of times per day. Always check the return journey before setting out.

Google Maps can be useful for discovering an unfamiliar operator, but use the operator’s own current timetable for an important connection. Timetable feeds, temporary diversions and rural services are not always represented perfectly in third-party apps.

Tickets, cards and validation: the mistakes newcomers make

Buying the wrong local product: Lisbon Navegante/VIVA and Porto Andante are different systems.

Not validating: some tickets/passes must be validated before or when boarding even though they have already been loaded or paid for.

Assuming a national rail pass covers every transport operator: the Passe Ferroviário Verde is a CP product, not a universal Portugal bus/metro pass.

Forgetting the Intercidades reservation: Green Rail Pass holders still need the required advance seat reservation.

Assuming Alfa Pendular is included: it is not included in the Green Rail Pass.

Using an old blog for fares: passes, discounts and networks change.

Only checking trains: Rede Expressos or FlixBus may have a much better route.

Only checking the outbound trip: particularly risky in rural Portugal.

Accessibility, bicycles, luggage and pets

Rules vary by operator and service. CP publishes specific conditions for accessible travel, bicycles, luggage and animals; metro and bus operators have their own rules. If you need guaranteed assistance, are travelling with a bicycle, large luggage or a pet, check the operator before departure rather than assuming the rule is the same throughout Portugal.

Useful links to save

CP — national rail timetables and tickets.

CP Green Rail Pass — current €20 pass coverage and conditions.

Rede Expressos — domestic/intercity coaches.

FlixBus Portugal — domestic and international coach alternatives.

Metro Lisboa.

Carris.

Carris Metropolitana.

Fertagus.

Transtejo/Soflusa — Lisbon ferries.

Metro do Porto.

STCP — Porto buses.

Andante — Porto metropolitan ticketing.

Related BorderlessAdvice guides

#98 Driving in Portugal.

#103 Portuguese toll roads and Via Verde — useful when comparing car versus public transport.

#105 Cycling, walking, taxis, Uber/Bolt and car sharing — next: filling the gaps between scheduled public-transport services.

#116 Where to live in Portugal — later in this series, including how transport availability changes the practical meaning of “good location”.

Last verified: 2 October 2026.
