Internet in Portugal ranges from very fast fibre in many towns and villages to mobile or satellite connections at isolated rural properties. Do not choose a provider from advertising alone: first check what is actually available at the exact address, then compare price, speed, commitment period, installation and mobile coverage.
Start with coverage, not the brand
Use GEO.ANACOM to check fixed, mobile and satellite network coverage at a location. ANACOM’s internet tariff comparison is also useful for comparing offers. A neighbour having fibre does not guarantee that your particular house can be connected, especially on rural roads, so confirm the address with the provider before signing.
Fixed home internet
The principal consumer providers include MEO, NOS, Vodafone and DIGI. Availability differs by address. Compare the real monthly price after promotions, advertised versus expected speed, router/equipment, installation charge, telephone/TV bundle, and especially the fidelização (minimum commitment period).
Fibre (FTTH) is normally preferable where available. Cable and other fixed technologies remain in use. In a thick-walled stone house, poor Wi-Fi in a bedroom does not necessarily mean the internet line is slow: the problem may be the router position or the building itself.
Mobile phones and SIMs
MEO, NOS, Vodafone and DIGI operate mobile networks in Portugal, while other brands can use a host network. Compare coverage where you actually live and work, not only headline data allowances. Rural valleys, granite buildings and mountain terrain can make two networks perform very differently at the same property.
Portable internet: hotspot, 4G/5G router or phone tethering
You do not need a fixed line to have usable internet. A Portuguese data SIM/eSIM can be used in a phone hotspot, portable battery-powered MiFi device, or a mains-powered 4G/5G router. This is useful while waiting for fibre installation, in temporary accommodation, for a motorhome, at a second home, or as a backup connection.
- Phone hotspot: cheapest way to start, but it drains the phone battery and is less convenient for an entire household.
- Portable MiFi: small rechargeable device that creates its own Wi-Fi network. Good for travel and temporary use.
- 4G/5G home router: better for continuous use and multiple devices; models with external-antenna connections can be particularly useful at marginal rural locations.
- Satellite: an option where terrestrial fixed/mobile coverage is inadequate; compare equipment, installation, monthly cost and line-of-sight requirements.
Before buying an expensive 5G router, test the intended network at the property with a phone/SIM if possible. A costly router cannot create a strong signal where the operator has poor coverage.
Useful portable-internet equipment
Examples worth comparing include an unlocked 5G SIM router, a portable 4G/5G MiFi hotspot, external router antennas and a mini UPS for a router. Check the device’s supported Portuguese/EU frequency bands, SIM compatibility and antenna connectors before ordering.

Improving Wi-Fi inside the house
Large Portuguese houses, reinforced concrete and old stone walls can defeat a single router. Ethernet cabling or a properly positioned mesh system is usually more reliable than repeatedly adding cheap extenders. For a simple problem, compare mesh Wi-Fi systems and Wi-Fi extenders.
Television from the telecom providers
Traditional subscription television is commonly sold in a bundle with internet and telephone/mobile services. The major groups are MEO, NOS, Vodafone and DIGI/NOWO. Check the channels you actually want, number of boxes/screens, recording/replay features, app access and commitment period rather than comparing channel counts alone.
You do not need a Portuguese TV package to stream
Netflix Portugal is available directly, and Amazon’s streaming ecosystem is also available. A compatible smart television may already contain the apps you need. Otherwise, a streaming stick or box can turn an HDMI-equipped television into a streaming TV.
For streaming subscriptions, go directly to the service: Netflix Portugal and Amazon Prime / Prime Video. The Amazon link is an affiliate link where the account/marketplace permits attribution; the purpose here is the subscription itself, not to push Amazon hardware.
nIf your television is not smart, or its apps are obsolete, a streaming device can still be useful. Compare devices from their manufacturers and mainstream Portuguese retailers as well as marketplaces; for example, Google TV/Chromecast-type devices, Apple TV and compatible streaming boxes/sticks. Do not buy extra hardware if your existing television already runs the services you need.
Portuguese free-to-air television
Portugal also has free-to-air terrestrial television (TDT). Depending on the property and reception, an aerial and compatible TV/decoder can provide the available free channels without a paid television subscription. This can be useful at second homes or where you mainly use streaming.
Streaming, VPNs and foreign services
Streaming catalogues and rights vary by country and service. Do not assume a subscription bought abroad provides exactly the same catalogue in Portugal. Netflix, Prime Video and other services set their own account, household and geographic rules. Check the service’s current Portuguese terms rather than relying on old expat instructions.
Before signing a telecom contract
- Check the exact address on GEO.ANACOM and with the provider.
- Ask what technology will actually be installed: FTTH fibre, cable, mobile or something else.
- Compare total price after introductory discounts.
- Check the commitment period and early-termination consequences.
- Confirm installation/equipment charges and whether equipment must be returned.
- For mobile or portable internet, test signal where possible and check data/fair-use conditions.
- Decide whether you genuinely need bundled television and landline service.
- For rural work-from-home use, consider a second mobile network or portable router as backup.
- Keep the contract summary, order confirmation and equipment-return proof.
