Leaving the Netherlands is more than cancelling the rent. Your BRP record, tax, benefits, health insurance, utilities, vehicle, pension and—if you are not Dutch—residence status can all be affected.

Deregister from the BRP when required

If you will live abroad for more than 8 months within a 12-month period, Government.nl says you must deregister as a Dutch resident, even if the 8 months are not consecutive and even if you keep your home in the Netherlands. You deregister with your municipality; your record then moves to the RNI/non-resident part of the BRP.

Leaving checklist

  • Municipality / BRP deregistration and proof if needed
  • IND: effect of absence/departure on your residence status
  • Belastingdienst and any migration-year tax return
  • Benefits/toeslagen and UWV/SVB where relevant
  • Dutch health insurance and other insurance
  • Employer, pension providers and bank/contact address
  • Housing, utilities, internet/phone and municipal taxes
  • Vehicle/export/registration if taking a car
  • Mail forwarding and DigiD/MijnOverheid contact details

Do not accidentally damage a status you want to keep

Long absences can affect Dutch residence permits and some permanent-status calculations. Dutch citizens with another nationality can also face nationality-loss rules in certain circumstances abroad. If maintaining a Dutch status matters to you, check the relevant IND rules before establishing long-term residence elsewhere.
