Marriage, a new child, separation and bereavement are personal events, but they also trigger Dutch administration. Start with the event that applies to you, then follow the municipality, BRP, tax, benefits, pension, housing and immigration links relevant to your situation.
Choose the life event
- Marriage, registered partnership or living together
- Having a child: the first administrative steps
- Divorce or separation
- After a death: Dutch administration and first steps
Why internationals should check one extra layer
A Dutch civil-status change can also affect residence rights, recognition abroad, nationality questions, foreign documents, pensions or benefits. Do not assume that a Dutch marriage, partnership or divorce automatically has exactly the same effect in another country. When immigration status depends on a relationship, check the IND separately.
Keep official certificates and confirmations. Civil-status records such as birth, marriage and death certificates can later be requested from the municipality where the record was drawn up.
