DigiD is the Dutch digital identity used to log in to government bodies, healthcare organisations, pension providers and other public services. For most people who have just moved to the Netherlands, the practical order is: register in the BRP, receive or confirm your BSN, then apply for DigiD.

What you need

  • Your BSN.
  • A registration address in the Dutch BRP for the normal Netherlands application route.
  • A mobile phone.
  • Access to the post sent to your registered address, because activation normally requires a letter.

How to apply

  1. Go to the official DigiD website and start an application.
  2. Enter your personal details and BSN.
  3. Create and keep your username and password.
  4. Wait for the activation letter sent to your BRP address.
  5. Activate your DigiD using the code in the letter. DigiD says the activation code must be used within 21 days.
  6. Set up the DigiD app and phone verification where possible; many organisations use stronger login methods.

How long does it take?

DigiD says the activation letter is generally sent within a few working days and can take up to 5 working days. Postal delivery can affect timing. Apply soon after your BRP/BSN setup if you expect to use Dutch online government services.

What can you use DigiD for?

  • Tax and benefit services.
  • Municipal and national government services.
  • Healthcare portals and health-related administration.
  • Pension and education services where DigiD is supported.
  • MijnOverheid and many other Dutch public-service portals.

If you live abroad

People living outside the Netherlands who already have a BSN can also apply for DigiD, but the activation process differs from the standard Netherlands resident route. If you already have a DigiD and move abroad, you can continue to use it. Use DigiD’s official abroad instructions rather than assuming the Dutch-address procedure applies.

Common problems

The activation letter does not arrive

Check that your BRP address is correct. DigiD allows you to request a new activation code in some situations; if repeated letters fail to arrive, contact the DigiD helpdesk.

I do not have a permanent home address

DigiD explains that a person registered in the BRP at a valid postal address may still apply. A PO box or empty address is not sufficient. Ask your municipality whether a postal address is available in your circumstances.

Quick checklist

  • Complete BRP registration.

  • Check your registered address.
  • Apply only through the official DigiD website/app.
  • Keep the username/password you created.
  • Watch for the activation letter.
  • Activate within 21 days.
  • Set up the DigiD app/phone verification.
