In the Netherlands, the best internet or mobile deal depends less on the national brand name than on your exact address, network, household usage and contract timing. Start with availability and the service you really need, then compare total contract cost, speed commitments, installation, equipment, price after the introductory period and exit rules.

Start with the address, not the advertisement

Fixed internet can be delivered through cable/coax, copper/DSL and fibre. ACM ConsuWijzer notes that provider choice varies by region because not every provider sells service on every network or address. A national headline price therefore does not mean the same package is available at your home.

  1. Enter the exact postcode + house number on provider availability checks.
  2. Identify the underlying connection: fibre, cable or DSL.
  3. Record the download and upload figures offered at that address.
  4. Check whether installation or activation is needed and on what date.
  5. Only then compare contract prices and bundles.

How much speed do you need?

Household patternWhat matters most
1-2 people, browsing, streaming, ordinary video callsStable service and decent Wi-Fi usually matter more than buying the highest headline speed
Multiple simultaneous 4K streams / gaming / large downloadsHigher download capacity and good in-home networking
Cloud backup, creators, large uploads, remote work with big filesUpload speed can be as important as download; fibre often has stronger upload performance
Large/old/multi-floor homeWi-Fi design, access-point placement and wired backhaul can matter more than the external line speed

Do not buy 1 Gbit/s merely because it exists. A slower stable line with well-designed Wi-Fi can outperform a very fast line feeding a badly placed router.

Compare the total contract, not the first six months

  • Monthly price during the introductory period.
  • Normal monthly price after the promotion.
  • Contract duration and earliest penalty-free exit date.
  • Activation/installation/shipping costs.
  • Router, modem, mesh/Wi-Fi point or TV-decoder rental/return obligations.
  • Download and upload commitments.
  • Price-indexation or inflation clauses.
  • TV package, recording/replay and extra-box costs.
  • Mobile bundle limits, EU roaming allowance and out-of-bundle tariffs.
  • Discounts for combining fixed and mobile service – and whether losing one product removes the discount.

Bundle or separate?

A combined internet/TV/mobile package can be convenient and may have a discount, but it also concentrates your services with one provider and can make comparison harder. Calculate the total annual price for exactly the services you would buy separately. If you mostly stream, a large traditional TV package may add little value. If you watch Dutch live channels or sports, compare the specific channel/app rights rather than assuming every provider carries the same package.

Newcomer checklist before ordering

  • Confirm the address is already serviceable, especially in new-build or recently fibre-connected properties.
  • Ask the landlord/VvE where the telecom termination point is if you cannot find it.
  • Do not cancel existing service until the new provider confirms the switch/activation route.
  • Keep the order confirmation and contract summary.
  • If working from home is critical, keep temporary mobile tethering/hotspot capacity for the activation day.
  • Cross-link your move with Moving house and Utilities: internet does not transfer automatically just because BRP or energy addresses change.

Source types

Official/regulator: ACM ConsuWijzer for telecom consumer rights and comparison rules. Government: Rijksoverheid for mobile-cost and credit rules. Independent dispute body: De Geschillencommissie where the provider/case is eligible. Provider sites and commercial comparison sites are useful for live prices and availability, but are commercial sources and should be treated as such.
