Finding childcare is partly a quality decision and partly a logistics problem. A provider can be excellent but unusable if it cannot offer your required weekdays, does not connect with your child’s school, or creates a commute that makes working hours impossible.

A practical search order

  1. List the exact days and times you need, including commute time.
  2. Search the official LRK around home, work and—when relevant—school.
  3. Ask several providers about actual availability and waiting lists.
  4. Read the contract and cancellation terms before accepting.
  5. Check the facility’s GGD inspection information.
  6. Calculate the net cost using the current kinderopvangtoeslag rules.

For BSO, start with the school

Ask which BSO providers collect children from the school, how transport is organised and what happens on school study days and holidays. A BSO farther away may be less practical even if it has space.

Gastouderopvang

Gastouderopvang can offer a smaller setting and potentially more flexibility. A registered gastouder must work through a gastouderbureau. New quality requirements took effect on 1 July 2026, including strengthened education/coaching requirements and limits relating to gastouderbureaus. Use the LRK and current government information when comparing arrangements.

Preschool / voorschoolse educatie is different

Municipal preschool or early-education arrangements can overlap with childcare but have their own purpose, eligibility and local rules. If your municipality or JGZ recommends voorschoolse educatie, ask the municipality/provider how the place is funded and whether ordinary kinderopvangtoeslag rules apply to your specific arrangement.
