Newcomers can choose between Dutch banks and international app-based providers. Compare the actual Dutch functions you need rather than assuming every account with a card works the same way.
| Provider type | Useful for | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| ABN AMRO / ING / Rabobank and other Dutch banks | Full Dutch day-to-day banking; many also offer savings, advice and mortgages | Fees, onboarding, English support and product eligibility |
| Revolut Netherlands | App-based banking, international use; eligible Dutch customers can have a local NL IBAN and Revolut supports iDEAL payments | Product eligibility and whether the exact feature you need is available on your plan/account |
| N26 | International app-based euro banking | IBAN country, Dutch-specific functionality and product availability |
| Wise | International transfers, currencies and receiving money in multiple currencies | Wise is not a substitute for every Dutch current-account function. Wise lets you fund eligible transfers with iDEAL using a Dutch bank account; that is not the same as the Wise account itself being your iDEAL checkout bank. |
iDEAL and Tikkie are separate questions
iDEAL is Dutch online account-to-account checkout infrastructure. Tikkie is ABN AMRO’s payment-request service. Tikkie is already common enough that newcomers should understand it early: a payment request opens an iDEAL payment flow for the payer. To use Tikkie as the person requesting money, check its current Dutch-account eligibility requirements.
International accounts can still be valuable
Wise, Revolut and N26 can be useful for international transfers, travel or maintaining cross-border finances. The sensible question is not “foreign or Dutch?” but whether the account supports salary, direct debits, instant SEPA transfers, Dutch checkout/payment requests, cash needs, joint banking, savings and — if relevant — a mortgage.
