Korfbal was developed in the Netherlands and is one of the clearest examples of a sport newcomers may rarely have encountered elsewhere. It is a team ball sport built around scoring through a high basket (korf) and has a long mixed-gender tradition.
How to try it
- Search for a local korfbalvereniging or use the national federation’s club information.
- Ask for a trial training and tell the club you are a beginner.
- Ask whether the club is playing field or indoor competition at that point in the season.
- Check fees, team level and equipment before registering.
Why include it in a newcomer guide?
Because understanding Dutch sport should not mean listing only internationally famous spectator sports. Korfbal is part of the association culture in many towns and can be an accessible route into local club life.
