A relocation budget needs two pots: the money required to arrive and set up, and the money required to live each month. Mixing them is one of the easiest ways to underestimate a move.

Pot 1: one-off arrival money

  • Temporary accommodation while searching.
  • Rental deposit and first rent.
  • Travel and moving belongings.
  • Furniture, household equipment and possible flooring/window coverings.
  • Bike or initial transport setup.
  • Immigration/document/translation fees where applicable.
  • Connection or installation costs.
  • An emergency buffer for a delayed salary, housing problem or unexpected bill.

Pot 2: recurring monthly costs

Do not budget from somebody else’s rent

A long-established tenant, social-housing tenant and newcomer searching the private market can face very different housing costs. CBS household averages are valuable for understanding the country, but they are not a promise of what a newly arrived renter will be offered.

Build three scenarios

  • Minimum viable: acceptable room/home, mostly cycling, careful discretionary spending.
  • Realistic: the housing and commute you are genuinely likely to choose.
  • Stress case: temporary accommodation lasts longer, rent is higher, or an allowance/employer reimbursement is unavailable.

The stress case is particularly important before moving: it tells you how much cash runway you need if the Netherlands does not immediately work according to plan.
