WW is Dutch unemployment insurance administered by UWV. Losing a job does not automatically mean every unemployed person receives WW: eligibility depends on your insured employment history, loss of working hours and the circumstances in which employment ended.

The basic work-history test

UWV’s 2026 guidance says the basic wekeneis is work in at least 26 of the 36 weeks before unemployment. Meeting that test can give three months of WW. A longer duration depends on the jareneis and employment history.

Do not resign casually if you expect WW

How employment ends matters. Voluntary resignation can jeopardise WW. If an employer proposes ending employment by agreement, check the benefit consequences before signing.

Practical steps when work ends

  • Check your final salary, holiday balance and holiday allowance.
  • Ask about the transitievergoeding if applicable.
  • Check the stated reason and end date.
  • Apply to UWV on time if you may qualify for WW.
  • Keep the contract, payslips, termination correspondence and settlement agreement.
  • Check pension consequences and any sector-specific arrangements in the cao.
