Portugal calls compulsory schooling from Years 1–9 ensino básico (basic education). For families arriving from abroad, the unfamiliar part is that it is divided into three cycles: 1.º ciclo (Years 1–4), 2.º ciclo (Years 5–6) and 3.º ciclo (Years 7–9). This guide explains how those years work in practice, how to enrol a child and what to expect if your child does not yet speak Portuguese.

Portugal’s three basic-school cycles

StageSchool yearsTypical agesWhat changes
1.º ciclo1.º–4.º anoroughly 6–10Primary-school style teaching, usually with a main class teacher plus specialist activities.
2.º ciclo5.º–6.º anoroughly 10–12More subject teachers and a timetable organised by subjects.
3.º ciclo7.º–9.º anoroughly 12–15Broader subject teaching leading to completion of basic education; 9.º ano has final-cycle assessment requirements.

A child’s exact placement is not determined from age alone. If you arrive from another education system, give the school records showing the years and subjects already completed so the Portuguese school can determine the appropriate placement/equivalence.

Public school and your local agrupamento

Many Portuguese public schools belong to an agrupamento de escolas: one organisation can manage several schools serving different ages. Your child’s 1.º ciclo building may therefore be different from the school used in Years 5–9, while administration sits within the same grouping.

Start with the official DGEstE information and the schools in your municipality. When choosing preferences, remember that submitting a preferred school is not the same as guaranteeing a place; placement rules and capacity matter.

How to enrol

The central online route is the Portal das Matrículas. It handles first enrolment, relevant cycle transitions, transfers and pupils arriving from foreign education systems. Some renewals in non-transition years are automatic, so do not assume you must submit the same process every summer.

  1. Collect the child’s identity and school records.
  2. Prepare proof of the information used for the enrolment/placement process, as requested by the portal or school.
  3. Use Portal das Matrículas when the case is handled online.
  4. For a child arriving from abroad, contact the intended school/agrupamento as well—especially for equivalence, language assessment or a mid-year arrival.
  5. Keep the submission confirmation and respond quickly if the school asks for additional documents.

Moving during the school year? The Portal das Matrículas expressly supports transfers during the academic year. Do not wait until the next September if your child is already living in Portugal and needs a school place.

What if my child doesn’t speak Portuguese?

Ask specifically about Português Língua Não Materna (PLNM). Portuguese rules provide PLNM for pupils whose mother tongue is not Portuguese or who have not previously been schooled in Portuguese. The school assesses Portuguese proficiency when the pupil enters the system; the framework includes initiation levels A1/A2, intermediate B1 and advanced B2/C1.

For pupils placed at A1, A2 or B1, PLNM can take the place of the ordinary Portuguese subject under the applicable rules. Support in a particular school depends on the pupil and how the school organises provision, so ask the school what it can actually offer rather than assuming every newcomer receives identical hours.

Subjects and school life

In the first cycle children build Portuguese, mathematics and broader foundational learning. From the second cycle onward the timetable becomes recognisably subject-based, including Portuguese/PLNM, mathematics, sciences, history/geography, languages, arts and physical education. Schools organise their timetable within the national curriculum framework.

Ask the school about:

  • daily start/finish times and lunch arrangements;
  • school meals and any social-support entitlement;
  • textbooks and digital resources;
  • before/after-school activities;
  • the parent portal/app used for absences, grades and messages;
  • transport if you live in a rural municipality;
  • special educational or inclusion support your child already receives.

Assessment and the end of basic education

Assessment changes as children move through the cycles. By 9.º ano, national final-cycle assessment is particularly important: in 2026 the final examinations cover Portuguese (or the applicable PLNM/Portuguese-language route) and Mathematics, and the final-cycle tests contribute to the final classification under the current rules.

Exam rules and calendars can change by school year. For an older child, use the current education authority information and the school’s own exam notices rather than relying on an old expat article.

Arriving from abroad: practical checklist

  • Bring recent report cards/transcripts and proof of completed school years.
  • If documents are not in Portuguese, ask the school what translation or authentication it requires before paying for unnecessary formalities.
  • Contact the school early if your child has additional educational needs.
  • Ask for a PLNM assessment if Portuguese is not the child’s schooling language.
  • Explain any subjects your child has already studied so placement is based on the actual educational record.
  • If arriving mid-year, request a transfer/enrolment immediately.
  • Once enrolled, learn the school’s communication system and absence-justification rules.

Public, private or international?

This guide focuses on the Portuguese basic-education system. Public education is the default route for many families; private and international schools can offer different curricula, languages and admissions systems. If you are deciding between them, see our International and private schools in Portugal guide (#92). For the detailed foreign-child enrolment process, see Enrolling a foreign child in school (#94).
