Working in the Netherlands is more than finding a vacancy. You need to understand the contract, CAO, gross versus net pay, holiday allowance, leave, sickness rules, pensions, dismissal routes and where to get help. Use this hub as the practical route; use our workplace-culture guide for meetings, hierarchy, direct feedback, lunch and borrel culture.
Start with your situation
- Looking for work: start with the job-search and application guide.
- Got an offer: check contract type, hours, salary, probation, notice, CAO, pension and restrictive clauses before signing.
- Already working: learn to read your payslip and check holiday allowance, leave and sickness procedures.
- Something is wrong: use the workplace-problems guide for union, Juridisch Loket, Labour Authority and discrimination routes.
- Job ending: check dismissal procedure, final pay, transition payment and possible WW unemployment benefit.
- Starting your own company: see the separate Business section; employment and entrepreneurship are deliberately not mixed together here.
Do not confuse law, CAO and company custom
Dutch employment conditions can come from several layers: legislation, an applicable collectieve arbeidsovereenkomst (CAO), your employment contract and company policies. A friendly office custom is not necessarily a legal right; equally, your contract cannot simply remove statutory minimum protections.
