Speed skating is both elite sport and cultural tradition. Most winters do not produce enough natural ice for the great outdoor tours, so ordinary participation centres on artificial ice rinks, skating clubs, lessons and organised training.

How to try speed skating

  1. Find the nearest ice rink and local schaatsvereniging.
  2. Look for beginner lessons or introductory training before buying specialist skates.
  3. Ask whether skate rental is available.
  4. Learn rink etiquette and safety rules.
  5. If you enjoy it, explore long-track, short-track, marathon skating or recreational touring.

Natural ice

Never infer that outdoor ice is safe because people are skating somewhere else. Follow local authorities, ice clubs and event organisers. Natural-ice events depend on local conditions and can be cancelled at short notice.
