You are not legally required to register with a GP, but doing so is strongly recommended. It gives you a regular first point of contact, continuity through a medical record and access to the appropriate out-of-hours GP service.
How to register
- Search for practices near your home.
- Check whether they accept new patients and whether your address is inside their service area.
- Follow the practice registration process and provide the requested identity, insurance and contact information.
- If transferring from another Dutch GP, arrange transfer of your medical record.
- Save the practice’s normal and urgent phone numbers and identify its out-of-hours huisartsen-spoedpost.
Can a GP refuse me?
Yes, in some circumstances. Rijksoverheid gives examples including the practice being full or you living too far away. If you cannot find a GP, contact your health insurer: it can help find a practice and mediate.
Do not confuse registration with access to emergency care
If you face a life-threatening emergency, call 112. Do not delay because you have not yet completed GP registration.
Your medical record
You have rights concerning access to your medical record. Rijksoverheid states that you can inspect it and request a copy. Ask the practice how its patient portal works.
