Professional and elite sport is a separate layer from ordinary club participation. Football has the most visible professional league system, while Dutch elite sport is also highly visible in field hockey, speed skating and cycling.
Football
The Eredivisie sits at the top of men’s professional club football. Professional clubs coexist with a much larger amateur football system governed through the KNVB.
Hockey, skating and cycling
These sports have strong elite competition and national-team visibility, but participation normally begins through a local club, rink or cycling organisation rather than through the professional side of the sport.
Watching live sport
Buy tickets through the club, federation or event organiser. High-demand football fixtures can involve club accounts, membership or ticket restrictions. Avoid assuming a resale marketplace is authorised; check the organiser’s ticket terms first.
