The safest financial move when relocating is usually a controlled overlap: keep the old account functioning while you establish Dutch salary, bills, tax, benefits and payment tools. Closing everything before the new system works can create avoidable problems.

Before the move

  • Download recent bank statements and proof of balances.
  • List recurring direct debits, standing orders and subscriptions.
  • Ask your existing bank whether Dutch residence changes eligibility or fees.
  • Prepare proof of identity, address, income and source of funds.
  • Do not rely on one payment card during travel/moving week.

After registration

  • Open or activate the account(s) you actually need.
  • Update employer/payroll and key direct debits.
  • Register the correct account with Belastingdienst/Toeslagen where needed.
  • Update tax residence with financial providers.
  • Test access, cards and authentication before moving all money.

Only then simplify

Once salary, tax refunds, benefits, rent/mortgage, utilities and subscriptions are working, decide whether the old account still serves a purpose. If you close it, download statements first and keep evidence of the closure and final balance.
