Saving and investing solve different problems. Cash savings prioritise access and capital stability; investing accepts market risk in pursuit of longer-term growth. A newcomer should first understand emergency liquidity, Dutch tax treatment, costs and diversification before choosing an investment platform or product.

Before investing

  • Keep money needed soon out of volatile investments.
  • Build an emergency buffer appropriate to your household.
  • Understand platform/product fees and currency costs.
  • Check whether the provider is supervised and which investor-protection arrangements apply.
  • Understand Box 3 and cross-border tax/reporting consequences.
  • Diversification reduces concentration risk; it does not remove market risk.

Common categories

Residents may encounter individual shares, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, managed portfolios and pension-oriented products. BorderlessAdvice does not rank investments or tell readers what to buy; the useful distinction is between product structure, risk, diversification, costs, liquidity and tax treatment.

Deposit guarantee is not investment protection

The Dutch Deposit Guarantee protects eligible bank deposits, not losses on shares, bonds, funds or crypto-assets. Do not interpret a regulated platform or compensation scheme as a guarantee against an investment falling in value.
