Portugal has a wide range of private and international schools, especially around Lisbon/Cascais, Porto and the Algarve. They are not all the same: some follow the Portuguese national curriculum, while others use British/Cambridge, American, International Baccalaureate (IB), French, German or bilingual programmes.
If you are moving with children, start by deciding which qualification pathway matters most: staying compatible with a home-country curriculum, preparing for Portuguese higher education, or following an internationally portable route such as the IB Diploma, IGCSE/A levels or an American high-school programme.
Private school is not the same as international school
A Portuguese colégio privado may teach the Portuguese national curriculum in Portuguese. An “international school” may instead teach mainly in English or another language and use an overseas or international curriculum. Some schools offer both Portuguese and international tracks.
Before applying, verify the exact curriculum, the qualification awarded at the end, the teaching language and whether the programme has the accreditation or authorisation you expect.
Common curriculum options
- Portuguese national curriculum — useful if your child is likely to stay in Portugal and continue into Portuguese higher education.
- British / Cambridge — often leads through IGCSE and then A levels or, at some schools, the IB Diploma.
- International Baccalaureate (IB) — schools may offer PYP, MYP and/or the Diploma Programme; verify the school and programme through the official IB directory.
- American curriculum — typically follows US-style grade progression; some schools combine this with IB.
- French or German curriculum — useful for families wanting continuity with those national systems.
- Bilingual programmes — may combine Portuguese and English rather than replacing the Portuguese curriculum completely.
Where to verify schools
- Portugal’s official school network search (GesEdu) — useful for checking schools and school groupings.
- Official IB World School finder — verify whether a school is actually authorised for the IB programme it advertises.
- Cambridge International school finder — verify Cambridge programmes.
International schools around Lisbon and Cascais
The Lisbon/Cascais/Sintra area has Portugal’s largest concentration of international schools. Useful starting points include:
- St. Julian’s School — Carcavelos/Cascais area.
- Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (CAISL) — Sintra; American/international pathway.
- Oeiras International School — IB programmes.
- TASIS Portugal — Sintra area; international curriculum including Cambridge/IB elements.
- International Sharing School Lisbon — IB-focused international school.
- IPS Cascais British International School — British-style pathway.
- King’s College School, Cascais — Cambridge curriculum and bilingual early-years/primary options.
- Lycée Français Charles Lepierre — French education in Lisbon.
- Deutsche Schule Lissabon — German school in Lisbon.
Porto and Northern Portugal
- CLIP — Oporto International School — one of the best-known international schools in Porto.
- Oporto British School — long-established British/international option in Porto.
- Other private and bilingual schools exist throughout the North; use the official school search and accreditation directories rather than relying only on expat lists.
Algarve
- Nobel Algarve British International School — campuses/options in the Algarve, with British-curriculum pathways.
- Vilamoura International School (CIV) — Portuguese and international pathways, including IGCSE and IB Diploma.
Demand can be high. Vilamoura International School, for example, currently recommends beginning the admissions process around 12 months before the intended entry year when possible.
What does it cost?
Fees vary enormously by age, school, curriculum and region. Do not compare tuition alone. Ask for the full annual cost including:
- application and registration fees;
- tuition;
- capital/building/development levies;
- books and technology;
- meals;
- school transport;
- uniform;
- exam fees;
- after-school activities and trips.
Some schools publish transparent current fee schedules. For example, CAISL publishes its 2026/27 fees, and Vilamoura International School publishes its current fees. Use the school’s current fee page rather than old expat-blog figures.
Admissions: apply early
Popular international schools can have waiting lists, especially in entry years. Contact schools before committing to a neighbourhood or signing a long rental solely because a school appears nearby.
Schools commonly ask for recent school reports/transcripts, passport or ID, previous-school details, language information, and sometimes an interview, assessment or reference. Requirements vary by school and age.
Questions to ask before choosing
- What exact curriculum and final qualification does the child follow?
- Is the programme officially accredited/authorised?
- What language is actually used for most teaching?
- How much Portuguese is taught?
- How does the school support a child who does not yet speak the teaching language?
- What are the class sizes?
- What are the full annual fees, not just tuition?
- Is school transport available from where you plan to live?
- What happens if the family leaves Portugal mid-year?
- How portable are the child’s credits/qualifications if you move country again?
- Which universities do recent graduates actually enter?
Portuguese versus international route
An international school is not automatically “better” for a foreign child. A Portuguese public or private school can provide stronger language and local integration, while an international school can make curriculum continuity easier for globally mobile families. The right choice depends on the child’s age, language, intended length of stay and future university plans.
